Guru Pournami

Festival Description

Guru Pournami marks the day where people worship and revere their gurus. It is celebrated in the Ashada month on a full moon day. It is also marks the birth date of Vyasa to sage Parashara and Satyavati, a fisherman’s daughter who is the author of Mahabharata. Hence this day is also called as Vyasa Purnima. Also,as per the Hindu mythology, it is also the day when Lord Shiva became the first guru and began the transmission of Yoga to the Saptarishis. This is the day when Lord Shiva became the Adi Guru and considered the most influential gurus. It is believed that Vyasa finished the writing of Brahma Sutra on this day. Hence most of the devotees recite the sutras on this day.


On this day, people visit their Gurus and pay their respect and seek their blessings. People choose to worship their teachers for all the guidance and learnings they have bestowed upon them. It is a day dedicated to revere and commemorate all the Gurus who are responsible for imparting wisdom to us.
